My experience so far/Opinion

Permanent Linkby Kaekae on Fri Feb 20, 2015 8:14 pm

Now that I've been using cloth for an entire week I thought I would update on my experience so far; Including my opinions on the different cloth nappies that I borrowed from the nappy library.

So far I have been pleasantly surprised at how hassle-free using cloth nappies has been. I expected a lot of extra work. Washing nappies takes no extra effort considering I wash our laundry a few times a week anyway, not to mention that my daughter has had no rashes since changing over.

As I mentioned in my previous blog post, the brand of nappies that I've borrowed from my local nappy library were gNappies, Close pop-in, Mother-ease one size/Mother-ease sandys and tots bots bamboozle.
Initially I liked all of the nappies for one reason or another and over the course of a week I've been able to get a real feel for their strengths and weaknesses. Here's what I made of each of the brands:

gNappies
Pros:
*Love their design, feels modern
*Perfect fit on my daughter/no bulk
*Don't have to change nappies at every change, just pop in a new insert and go.
*Quick drying
Cons:
Personally, I didn't find any problems with the gNappy but there were design issues that people may not like:-
*Tabs do up at the back so can be fiddly (my husband did complain about this at first)
*3 separate parts to the nappy (outer pants, washable pouch, cloth/disposable insert) although not an issue to me
*Sized nappies therefore expensive if/when you move up a size

Close Pop-In
Pros:
*Nice fit around the leg
*Good absorbency
*Quick Drying
*Poppers to adjust fit to child - Birth to potty
Cons:
*Unattractive - colours are a bit washed out compared to those of the gNappy
*I'm not sure if it's down to my inexperience or my child's body shape but the fit around the waist doesn't seem very good. My daughter is approximately 25lbs so well under the recommended weight for the size 4 setting but no matter how much I tried it always seemed a bit too small for her.

Motherease one size/Sandys
I thought i'd review these together as I feel that they share a lot of the pros and cons. I'll state otherwise.
Pros:
*Simplistic design - No frills and does the job well
*The elasticated waistband and leg ensures a nice fit, especially on larger babies
*Poppers are well placed and ensure a nice fit
*Easy to wash
Cons:
*Requires a lot of boosting to get a good absorbency
*Not that appealing to look at design wise compared to other nappies
*Bulky compared to some of the other nappies

Tots Bots bamboozle
Pros:
*Really soft next to baby's skin
*Good absorbency
*Nice stretch, will fit chubbier babies
Cons:
*Take longer to dry compared to the others I've tried
*Relatively bulky

Overall my favourites are gNappies and the mother-ease nappies. I feel that they fitted my daughter well and did everything I needed them to. I wouldn't rule out using Tots bots bamboozles in the future but wouldn't consider using pop-ins again.
I have already ordered some gNappies to start off my stash. :yahoo:

It's a good start and yes, different nappies suit different babies. Good luck with the stash building.
