We had them when living in a flat next to a field. The field was cut the same week as the pavement was being resurfaced and they had all the covers off the air vents to the building so the mice moved in! We found expanding foam worked quite well to block up the holes.

My mum & dad had them a while ago & they got the pest control out to sort it out after their traps failed to control the problem. The pest control man said that it is impossible to block all the holes to stop them getting in. They can squeeze through absolutely tiny gaps-he said if you can get a pencil through the gap then a mouse could get through. So it is just a matter of putting traps(humane or not depending on your views) or poison down and making sure no food is left out.
