Keep going, it gets easier with practice. The first I ever knitted was a baby blanket when I was pregnant. It took me ages and was riddled with mistakes, but it was great practice for tension and the second half was noticeably better than the first half!

I find the thumb cast-on method much easier and quicker to do than the 2-needle method

Oh my god just cast on 45 stitches in no time at all with thumb casting on! That's sooomuch easier. Right.... Next question my wool is all twisted up! What have I done and how do I rectify it?

Which bit is that? The tail? The bit going to the ball?

Untwist it!
