Essential oils in wipe solution

Postby Tara84 » Fri Feb 19, 2010 12:32 pm

At what age would it be ok to add essential oils to wipe solution? We've been using plain water until now but got some samples of the sheepish grins wafers in with my bums and roses order today and they seem to clean much better than plain water, so was thinking about making my own solution. Most places seem to advise avoiding using oils with newborns but as she's 3 months now would it be ok to add some?

Personally I'd leave it until 6months but that's just me

It depends on the oils. I have a book and it says these for first 12 months. I'd probably avoid any nut based ones personally though. Olive oil is a good option as a moisturiser. Chamomile and lavender are good ones too. I think best to keep it simple though. Jojoba is ok too. Lanolin works well too. Ones that are edible.

Newborn: chamomile, yarrow, dill, lavender, hazelnut, sweet almond

2-6 months: mandarin, eucalyptus, coriander, neroli

6-12 months: palma, calendula, grapefruit, aniseed, tea tree

Thanks, I'll try a tiny bit of lavender.

I have been making my own since Rufus was 6 months, before that I bought it (never found plain water enough) either Northern Essences, Sheepish Grins or the Bibs n Bots Wipe Cubes.

I use sweet almond as a base, then add sweet orange, mandarin, lemon & chamomile,
a squirt a Burt's Bees Baby Wash & then fill the bottle with cooled boiled water

I use a foaming bottle - they are empty Northern Essence Foaming Wipes Solution Bottles.

I was wondering about this: I bought a Cheeky wipes set, and the solution for the wipes is tea tree and lavender - is this alright for my 1month old?

I've read a few things that say to avoid lavender and tea tree oil as it can effect hormones in the body http://readingdirt.blogspot.com/2006/07 ... rogen.html

We used to use it when washing the nappies but havent used it since, im sure a little is ok x

DD is 21 months and we just use plain water in a spray bottle.
