Thrush - Help!

Postby Melh27 » Tue Jul 24, 2007 8:00 am

Girls,

Hi, I know I am an infrequent visitor to the forum, but I really need your help.

At the moment George seems to just be getting never ending thrush. It goes when I put him in sposies, but after 2/3 more days in cloth it comes back. It is awful too, open sores on his bum.

I mainly use fluffles, but if in bamboozles etc I use fleece liners. I wash (at the moment exclusively it feels) at 60, I use white vinegar & tea tree & lavender oils in my wash.

This problem seems to have started since George became 1. I need to replace my nappies with next size up but am reluctant to spend a fortune if this is going to continue.

any ideas?

love

I think it was Steph that told me lavender makes Isabelles bum worse maybe that could be it?

What do you wipe him with?

I started using washable wipes and these baby soaps from babykind but now think these made her bum worse. SHe got very blistered, bought on by teething but made worse by these soaps I think.

I have since been using throw away wipes again but will make my own solution i think and use that with wipes or just water.

Have you tried using your bamboozle and paper liners and stay away from the manmade stuff . I remember someone on another forum that had a problem like this with fluffles

hi! unfotunately i have become a bit of an expert on re-occuring thrush and sores, and we seem to be at the end of the woods, so let me tell you what we have done.

1. ditch all microfibre! i found it made Zacharias bot warmer and sweatier and made the thrush come back more, i now stuff my pocket with only hemp and bamboo
2. wash with only water (or angel mama baby earth nappy rash soap if you think you need something extra) dry very very well (give some nappy off time if possible)then put on thrush cream then once that is absorbed some barrier cream
3. wash all nappies and wipes at 60
4. strip all you nappies and wash with NO detergent for a bit (build up wont cause thrush, but will make it worse)
5. as much nappy off time as poss
6 we used disp at night for a few days after rash was all clear and re introduced cloth slowly, also keep using thrush cream for 7-10 days after rash has gone
7. probiotic powder - costs a fortune (£15 for a packet) but i have added tiny amounts to his milk for a few weks, and has really helped his poos not to give hm thrush again as soon as he poos. packet seems to be lasting a long time at least
8. just try to make everything at natural as poss. i have switched to wool instead of PUL, but i wont give up my pockets so have made sure all filling is natural, tried silver liner, dont know if it worked (rash was ok by then!!) but have been putting it in his night nappy just incase anyway!
9....had another but cant remeber it!! yes, i bought new very good quality fleece and made oversized liners, they have been good too! paper didn't make it worse...will now use when out..but new fleece is fab.

i really hope some of this helps, i cant tell you what an awful time we had of thrush and nappy rash...also must admit that a small part of it may have been caused by slightly too small nappies (in my case pockets) rubbing and not letting air in.
please ask more qus, and i'm sorry i have rambled on and hope some of it makes sense, i am meant to only be lurking today,, but couldn'y let someone go thru what i have if there is anything i can say to help!

oh and he is one too!! i seem to see a pattern, on a different forum when i posted my prob there were a lot of other mummies who had experienced similar all around the 1 yr mark!!
in our case, we seem to have had 1 virus followed by antibiotics, folloowed by some teething followed by more antibiotics all encased in a nice big growth spurt!!! (and there was another virus in there somewhere too!)
my Ma in Law says her kids always got ill and rashy when they were growing, and mine seem to do the same, even tho the doc says there is no connection, i ended up doing so so many different thinsg to get rid of this rash as it seemed to have so so many different causes.

but when you choose to come out of disps, do ditch the fluffles if you can bare, or restrict to 1 a day, if removing it from my pocket made a difference (anyone want 15 microfibre pads!?) hopefully a whole nappy will make a difference to you

Thanks Shevi,

it is sooooo annoying that it could well be the fluffles - I have been using them for over a year now and then suddenly this problem.

We have decided that they have to go, and will be replaced with fuzzi bunz I think - but will take your advice and go for natural stuffings.

Where did you get the acidophilus powder? I think I will have to get some, but I think we are doing almost everything else you suggested! The double cream seems to be working well.

Now my only problem is how to replace a whole nappy collection in 1 go! aarrgghhhh pmsl
