Wicking or Leaking?

Is there a difference between a nappy that's wicking and a nappy that's leaking? It seems that a lot of the nappies that I'm using for Lucas at the moment are leaving him damp around where the nappy sits on his thighs - sometimes making his vest a bit damp, too. This is happening whether the nappy is very wet, or not very wet and mostly with the microfibre inserts - is this the cause? I've been looking at other inserts so that I can combine, just in case. I've checked his position in the nappy so that I know he's not weeing off to the side, and I don't think that's it. This is happening in BG and BBOS - I think the leaks in the PB and GK were user error! :)

Thanks for any advice.

It sounds to me like the MF inserts aren't quite absorbant enough for you. Have a look on the Easy Peasy website and look at their hemp inserts. They are cheap, absorbant and don't bulk the nappy out too much :)

I agree with Tanya, it sounds like the MF inserts aren't really working for you. We don't get on with MF at all and use bamboo and hemp in all of our pockets.

Just bamboo and hemp? I thought they took longer to absorb, but held more so that's why I was thinking of combining microfibre (quick to absorb) with one of the other two to hold more. But maybe that won't work. :-? I recently ordered a standard minki to try for night time and thought I might use a bigger weed insert with a slimma stuff mf insert on top of that. Does that sound like it might work?

Sounds a good combo too me. I always use MF and either bamboo or hemp in pockets.

it does seem like the inserts are the problem here... maybe try doubling up with hemp or another MF, or bamboo...
heres some cheap ones

Nature babies microfibre insert- £1.50
motherease bamboo booster- £2.10
cotton babies diaper doubles- £1.50
nappy booster microfibre- £1.00
= bumdiddybaby.co.uk

and a triple layer hemp booster can be bought from nappycentral.co.uk for £1.80

Thank you everyone. It's quite strange - he fell asleep while wearing a BBOS (the furry marbled orange one :) ) and so I put him in his bed. The insert was the BB one with the mf and 2 layers of hemp (?). When he woke up, the insert wasn't sodden and was doing very well, but the legs of the nappy where the elastic is was all damp and would have gone through to his vest but for the fact I unfastened it for him before he slept. Is this just a normal part of cloth nappies? I'll definitely try stuffing the pockets with other fabrics, though, alongside mf.
