Yes I think so it's the way they are made I don't know if you would be able to ask for a different binding though...

it isn't really the fabric. It is just that isn't as sleek looking as their AI2s ifyswim? I possibly have a mild form of ocd - lol.

I don't think the lycra binding would make a difference to how sleek they look - they're a very bulky fitting wrap as they're designed to fit over ALL fitteds including folded terries... When I first bought one I was a bit put off by how poofy it looked but it doesn't bother me now If I want sleek looking e.g. under a dress then I use a pocket

Do you have an AI2? Would it fit over a nappy as a wrap then?

No, but I do currently have an AI2 in my basket - that is definitely an idea. I have a few WNNLs now (and love them) so I would love a lagoon and turquoise wrap for over them.
