It's quite hard to bear thinking about in that sort of scale and terms.

I weighed a disp for Emma at puddlekins for K's new night nappy and his disp weighed exactly 300g when wet too (after 12 hours).

Thats an amazing amount of nappies!

You know it actually makes me feel that this is happening to our planet, perhaps there should be a ban on disposables uless for good reason, lordy can you imagine the out cry that would cause
It is a sickening amount and to think I contributed to it by not knowing about cloth with the other 2

110.5131 tonnes @ 300g wet weight!

TBH the dry weight is more interesting as the rest is mostly organic material that breaks down quickly. There is however the cost to the environment of moving all that weight around from house to disposal so it's probably worth including. How much diesel is used to move 110 tonnes!!

It would probably be interesting to break down the dry weight into constituents and their impact on the environment. Some being worse than others.

@Kirstyh - hopefully we can use this to present some fairly easily digestible facts that may help sway some people. I agree it is shocking but not irreversible.

I am not sure that is right - the liquid is absorbed by the gel crystal thingys so I am not sure it would break down quickly - it isn't like a cloth nappy where the liquid will evaporate, the liquid in a disposable goes solid and even if left out in the air, I don't think it has the opportunity to be released. I am not a scientist though so I really don't have a clue
