Newborn stash building

Ok so how many nappies do you need in a stash for a newborn, bearing in mind it's likely to be a 9-10lb newborn?

I'm thinking of small bamboo Sandy's under wool, mainly interlock I can throw in the wash easily, with a few chunky knitted and handspun soakers as I like those under sleep suits. We used organic cotton tots bots with Ella, which were ok, but we had a lot of problems with rashes with them. I'm sure there will be some fitteds in among things, but I'll have 8 months to stash build. :giggle: If I space out building it up, I'll barely notice any cost involved and can get regular cloth fixes. :giggle: :wine:

The other thing I want is to make up some prefolds and use those inside really basic wool interlock pockets. I want to avoid PUL and probably pocket nappies until much later on, certainly no PUL wraps as we had such problems with them before so I don't really get on with PUL particularly. How many prefolds and fitteds do you tend to need though? With Ella we started from after 4 or 5 month, can't really remember, but she was only just rolling about at that stage where I held off until she went into size 2s before buying her a stash.

:hohoho: They're pencilled in there too. So far I have 5 LLS fitteds. Is that not enough or too many? :hohoho: I feel like I take advantage buying them at cost, well fabrics provided too.

I'm making a fantasy stash on file. There will be some Luscious Little Prefolds too, once I've worked the wool wraps out properly.

I better be quick then and get an order in with you then. :giggle: I've worked out I need to keep about 5m of washable wool just for bump to be.

I looked at Tory's stash and though 15 Sandys, 5 Nature Babies, 5 LLS, 36 Prefolds?, 10 wool wraps / soakers. If I buy 2-3 nappies a month then DH will never notice and like magic I'll have a newborn stash.

I may ask the hospital about using cloth there as I'd really, really like to be able to use cloth from birth.

I'm also expecting a large baby, so haven't gone overboard on tiny sizes. With Iris (who was in cloth from when we got out of hospital, on day 6), I had just 25 nappies. Plus 10 muslin squares that I never used as nappies, as I'm useless at folding flats. It was enough to get by with washing every other day. I did take cloth to the hospital with Iris, as they were happy for me to do so. :wine: But we didn't use it due to her being in SCBU and me having more important things to worry about. We'll be taking cloth to the birth centre this time.

So far, Bean has:

6 xs Sandy's - just in case he is a tiddler!
4 small Wee Notions Northern Lights
2 medium Itti Bitti AIO (I find these tiny, hence the mediums!)
2 small Dunk N Fluff
2 small made by me (Darling Diapers - same pattern as a Dunk N Fluff)
1 small WN SS
1 small Pocketbots
2 Baby Beehinds OS
1 BubuBébé OS
3 Piddle Poddle OS
3 Easyfit OS
1 Little Britiches OS
1 Cushie Tushies OS

Oh, and I also have a small Bumhugger and a medium Flutterby Fluff night nappy for him - ready for once he's a bit bigger and in to night nappies.

Then I have 4 small and 1 newborn soaker, with another two small soakers expected from Sadie soon. I won't buy/knit more until he's in larger sizes; I don't need too many small ones as they will dry very quickly here in summer. And 1 small Blueberry wrap. Oh, and I have a medium WN wrap to use over night nappies, too. I have a ton of interlock, so I should knock some boardies or soakers together for him (been meaning to for ages!), just 'cause I can.

I also have enough fabric to make a further 6 nappies using the Darling Diapers pattern. I think 5 of those I'll make as mediums and 1 will be a small, as I have an embroidered tshirt for Iris to match the nappy cut for Bean. They can wear them for the official photos to send the folks at home. :giggle:

I don't know yet whether to buy/make a few more small nappies or wait and see how big he is and what shape he is and buy more when he's born. I'm leaning towards the latter, TBH, as I don't see the point in having a ton of stuff that might not work for him. I do have a million hemp pocket inserts that I could use as prefolds if I get really stuck while waiting for new fluff. :giggle: But I expect to wash every other day and not have to tumble this time, either! There is one small bonus of having a baby in the heat we'll have in January. :giggle:

Beth - don't ask them, just do it! With ds we were told no cloth in hospital, but i wasn't into cloth at that point. With dd i decided to just do it without asking, if anyone noticed, what're they going to do? The mw's never saw me changing her, the immediate paed check she was meant to have was cancelled  and on day 3 a paed saw her and commented on the nappy being nice. We weren't allowed to keep bags etc out, so the wet bag just went straight back in for noone to know.

Not sure that's enough  lol!

With DD I didn't even ask the hospital about cloth....I wasn't meant to be there so was in a bad mood with them anyway and thought "TOUGH" lol but they didn't say anything anyway. I was only there for a few hours after she was born so it wasn't a major deal.....as long as you deal with the dirty nappies yourself and they're not causing a problem for other mums/staff etc then I really doubt there'd be a problem :)
