Please Help us :(Sore Bum issues

Postby Lizw » Thu Mar 17, 2011 9:40 pm

Hi
I am a cloth newbie and am slowly building up my husband into using them. We have moved to cloth during the day but are yet to do nights - the main thing that is stopping us is my little boy's nappy rash. He seems red and sore - my husband seems to think it might be the paper liners that we have been using which are keeping the poo close to his skin and making the rash worse. Could anyone tell me whether it is worth swapping/ trying fleece nappy liners rather than the paper ones.

The other issue is the staining in the nappies - I cold rinse them and then wash them at 60 degrees every evening but we still have yellow poo stains. My little one is 12 weeks old and is EBF if that makes any difference.
At the moment I have a little boy with a sore bum and I can sense my husbands desire to use cloth weakening.
Please help us :-?

Paper liners gave DS2 awful nappy rash, would even bleed  :( so I switched to fleece liners and he has had a scrumptious rash free bum ever since :wine:

It's def worth a try and if it's not that, at least you've eliminated one option!

Meant to say, sun helps get rid of stains. When your stained nappies are on the line, keep spraying them with water as it's the wet action with the sun that gets rid of them. Stains such as calpol poo etc are more difficult to shift though.

Ditching the paper makes the world of difference! I used them with Noah and whilst he stayed rash free they did used to stick to him..

For nappy rash now i use lanolin, its great stuff and provides a fabulous barrier whilst the skin heals.

And a day in the sun really helps to reduce stains.

Thanks so much ladies
I am going to try fleece liners and ditch the paper. Will also be getting those nappies out on the line as soon as we get sight of some sun :wine:
Can I ask what your washing routine is for your nappies? and what you use on them. Is it worth me buying some specialised detergent such as tots bots potion?

Thanks
Liz

bf poo comes out really easy, as the others say the sun gets it out. you don't even need to prewash/rinse ... and i personally only wash at 35 (although some others may wash hotter). i did this and line-drying for all of dd's bf nappies, and none of them ended up stained. if it's not sunny outside, you can lay them in your windowsill and it'll still work.

i don't use paper liners, but find the odd time that dd has nappy rash a little bit of paw paw salve and a fleece liner and it's cleared in no time. also i'm sure you are already, but make sure you change as soon as possible after a poo as it will get worse if it's in contact with the skin for longer. i find changing more frequently during times of a rash definitely helps.

regarding washing powders, i wouldnt' get any nappy-specific stuff. definitely use powder rather than liquid and it doesn't really matter which powder within reason. i've heard of people using ecover, simple (or is it simply?), bold 2-in-1, ariel. the only one i've heard bad things about is Daz.

I use Bold powder now and just a half dose for nappies, a cold rinse then a 60 wash followed by a couple of rinses.

Poppy is really prone to nappy rash so i always wash the nappies at 60 just in case. Noah wears night nappies so it makes sure al the germs are killed and not passed between each child..
