any info on pelvic floor exercise systems/cones

Postby 4timeslucky » Tue Nov 25, 2008 1:33 pm

Hi

After 4 kids I have decided my pelvic floor needs a bit of help, just finding doing the normal exercises (maybe I'm not doing them right or well enough  ) isnt doing the job and my pelvic floor isnt getting any stronger after no4.

Anybody used any of the systems(?) for sale out there?

I found these in Boots and as I have a gift card still with £20 on I thought I might give it a try.

http://www.boots.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CatalogSearchResultView?storeId=10052&catalogId=11051&langId=-1&pageSize=12&beginIndex=0&sType=SimpleSearch&resultCatEntryType=2&searchTerm=pelvic+floor

anybody know anything/have any experience in particular with the aquaflex cones or the boots toning system? The others are out of my price range/I dont really want to spend much more than my gift card

or any others that anyones tried/recommends

Thanks
Kath

not tried any , but have read articles 'bout ones that are different weights, you start with lightest and work your way up - they are supposed to be quite effective

I haven't tried any of the systems, but pilates has certainly helped me. Another alternative is yoga. However if you want to try doing either of these, then I would suggest going to classes rather than doing it from a DVD or book.

When I first qualified as a physio I worked for a while in womens health. I would really advise that you try to get your GP to refer you to a specialist physio as they will be able to assess you fully to determine what is the best thing for you.
Cones and stimulators can be great but may exacerbate a problem if not used correctly. For instance if the pelvic floor is quite weak it may struggle to work well when standing up, as the weight of the organs in the abdomen press down on it. So exercises in this position may cause fatigue and not be effective. In a lying position their is less pressure and so exercises work more effectively. A thourough assessment can really help - and also you can get stimulators on the NHS
You may be able to self refer to the obstetric/gynae physio attached to the maternity unit near you also.
Please feel free to pm if you want more info :)
