Birthday school cake help!

Postby emmavmorgan » Tue Oct 06, 2015 2:34 pm

@louise and any other cake gurus out there :cake:
The kids here always take cake/cupcakes to school on their birthdays and have a small party in the classroom. School has a new policy that the cake must be "plain" (I'm guessing no buttercream/icing etc?) which is fine but now I'm stuck there are 18 kids in the class what should I make? I'm completely devoid of inspiration :giggle:

Eek I m not sure without decoration they are pretty tasteless ... Unless you can flavour them with lemon or something? Or is that not allowed either? Erm I do plain buns with just the egg, butter, SR flour and sugar all weighing the same. We have those with custard or fruit etc.

Fairly dull isn't it :hohoho: who has birthday cake without goo!!
I might abandon the whole cake idea and spend the money I would have spent doing the cake on books for the classroom or something like that :-?

Do they really mean no icing or nothing in the cake (eg nuts, sultanas etc)? Might be worth double checking exactly what they mean?

I wonder if it's to do with allergies, pips would be allowed plain cakes but not iced as some icing has raw egg in (which is why pips has a box of treats at school ). I guess melting chocolate and putting sprinkles on isn't allowed either

@girlinleeds it's to do with the healthy eating policy, I think they really wanted to ban cakes from school but it's such an engrained tradition here that you have a school birthday cake as well as a cake at home and a cake for your party that there would be an outcry if it was banned completely :giggle: I think the thought is that they will bore us out of the tradition and we will all back down and give up without a fight in a year or so :hohoho:

My sil did coloured swirly cakes flavoured with mint green blue blueberry, vanilla yellow and pink pomegranate. They were fab! Will try and get the recipe.

Otherwise make pretty fruit kebabs, or pumpkin satsumas, or bread roll hedgehogs...
