Crunchy nappies

I put bicarb in with our clothes washes since we moved in Jan as the water here is ridiculously hard. I have not had many nappy washes here as A is pretty much potty trained so can't comment on whether it helps make nappies less crunchy. I know people that wet pail their nappy put bicarb in the water so it can't harm the nappies.
