Another vote for Artemis Fowl, Michael Morpurgo is good too. Is it for a girl or boy? Vicky was really into Jacqueline Wilson by then but you do need to check some of them are suitable for that age.

Sam (8) loves the Bear Grylls children's adventure stories and the Awfully Beastly Business series as well as David Wiliams and Roald Dharl. Tom (5) likes the Geronimo Stilton books and Jack Stalwart series.
