How do I make them last as long?

Postby smilinglou » Wed Mar 16, 2011 4:38 pm

I recently used sposies for a couple of weeks and found that they lasted for hours, a lot longer than our cloth nappies, I didnt have to worry about changing her before going out or wicking so I want to make our cloth nappies as long lasting and simple (I hope I'm not putting anyone off writing this I'm just having a bad couple of weeks  )
anyway I've taken out the microfibre and just used bamboo and hemp, is this the way forward, how do you get your cloth nappies to last as long as a sposie?
Thanks

They dont, well not here anyways. I guess ive just got used to always doing changes just before we go out and keeping an eye on the clock for when the next change is due. We just stick to what works best for us to get the longest time between changes, which is fitteds and wool normally. Our easyfits were fab for lasting ages but we have had to ditch aios again.

My cloth nappies last longer than a disposable. I usually boost all my nappies with a little lamb bamboo booster and and easy peasy hemp booster. They last for ages.

How long do you leave it between changes? I think nappies cloth or disposable should be changed every 2-3 hours, certinatly no longer than 3 hours x

Generally cloth nappies will never last as long as a sposie as they don't have the nasty chemicals :puke: to help absorb all that liquid. To be quite honest I wouldn't want to change my babies/children any less frequently than 2.5 - 3 hours anyway even if they were in sposies. The sposie hanging between the legs look makes me :puke:. In my experience fitteds will always last longer than pockets. Other than using bamboo and hemp rather than mf to stuff them with there isn't much else you can do.

^^ what louise said.

i also find zorb helps a lot ... so while i have to change other nappies every 1.5 - 2 hours, using my dunk n fluffs with zorb i can get 2-3 hours out of them.

By using fitteds and a good wrap. That's the only way I can get past any leaking or wicking issues, even on the WNSS/AI2 which fit Erin really well. At a push, a fitted can get completely soaked through but as long as the wrap is good fit (ME Airflow for me) you'll get no wicking or leaking. Not that I like to leave it that long...
Changing the inserts should help to some extent too, though keeping one microfibre insert at the top of the pile may help to absorb the wee quickly, while the bamboo & hemp will help hold it longer between changes (rather than it being squeezed back out every time your LO sits down etc, which can happen with microfibre... sorry if you know all this already  :lookround: )

Thanks for the answers, it's pretty much everything I already knew, I think it's just the wicking which is so different, I suppose I just got used to sposies which makes me really :x at myself, by the way I didnt leave them on for hours it was just purely when we went out and time gets away from me, I'm sure everyone has had this at some point but it was just nice not to have wet clothes.
Will definitely get some more hemp and bamboo bits x

Heh we used disps when we went away recently and I couldn't leave them on as long as I could cloth!! We got more leaks and wet clothes than we've ever had in cloth ;)

Petit Dessous and easy peasy hemp are definately a magic combo for pockets...
As for fitteds... Well you can't really beat fluff and stuff heavy wetter nappies and they're pretty trim too...
