I'm already stuck

I've not got past the swatch to measure how many stitches.
I'm quite proud that I managed to cast on though!
Right I've cast on and purled a row but every time I try I get a big loop at the end like this -

what am I doing wrong?
I decided to start again, this was only the swatch to count the stitches.
I tried casting on a few times and finally managed to sus it out.
I then cast on 144 stitches about 3 times

then got it right.
I knitted a few rows and my mum looked at it and told me to start again
I started again and concentrated more and managed to get past the icord row.
I wasn't happy with how it looked. I couldn't understand how I was going to get it to match up when I'd lost a stitch.

Thankfully Joeli made me realised I hadn't done the yarn over part of the icord row.
So I undid past the icord row and now I'm 2/3rds round doing it with the yarn over
A huge thank you to Joeli for this pattern and inspiring me to try
I'm amazed at how it looks, it's not 100% perfect but I'm happy.
