Our life with acute myeloid leukemia

Just a diary I'm keeping after we found out on 9th June 2010 (our baby's first birthday) that my other half has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer and how we get by (hopefully I'll be better with this than I am with a diary :giggle: )

Birth Story: Holly Ann Taylor

Permanent Linkby 0_Lisa_0 on Fri Feb 24, 2012 4:05 pm

Holly Ann Taylor born 22.2.2012 @ 17.03 weighing 8lb 6oz, a natural drug free homebirth.

My contractions originally started on 21st at about 4pm, just as I was going to OH's parents for dinner, they were uncomfortable but bareable and by the time dinner was over they were starting to slow down though not easing so I just got on with my usual routine. They more or less disappeared over night so I got in to bed early and thought I best make the most of it as it was probably going to be my last decent nights sleep for a while. Woke at about 1 am and thought I'd have a bounce on my ball to see if things would get going again but no luck so headed back to bed and warned OH I didn't think it would be too long.
Woke the next morning with Austin as normal, contractions painful but still infrequent so I left OH in bed as normal but I knew it wouldn't be too long. I got OH up at 11 and told him I was having contractions but I didn't think they would start properly until he was up to help with Austin, he told me I was being daft!
At 13:00 I was pacing and told OH he would have to go to his mums with Austin to shower and then come home as I was going in the bath to try and ease the pain. I called the midwife who showed up about 15 minutes later, confirmed I was about 3cm, waters intact but cervix was quite thick so thought it would be a while yet. We agreed she would leave me to it and pop back to check on me at about 17:00. I spent the afternoon wandering along the corridor upstairs between the bedroom and the bathroom, the bath hadn't done anything for me, so I'm glad that we hadn't bothered with the birth pool. At about 4.30 I was layed on the bed with OH when I felt a really painful contraction an decided that I wanted to go back to the bathroom, it was a very odd sensation and, having been told earlier that my waters were still intact I assumed they must be putting pressure on something and getting ready to pop. OH shouted a couple of times to see if I was ok to which I grunted yes, then about 16:50 he shouted again to which I shouted "no, call the midwife, I need to push!"
Cue a slightly panicked OH making a call to a midwife who was stuck in traffic but already on the way and passing on the message "breath deep and don't push" but it was too late. I had hit the wall where your body has already taken control and is doing what it needs to to deliver the baby, two big pushes on the toilet and the midwife arrived and told me I had to move off the toilet  I finally moved myself on to the floor, OH came and sat in the bath next to my head (poor man had been banished up until that point) and 4 big pushes and about 15 minutes later Holly was here!
We sat on the floor in the bathroom until the cord had finished pulsating, having skin to skin and our first :bf: just as I had asked and were pretty much left to it until I needed to push the placenta out which I did. After that it all got a bit out of hand, my bleeding didn't slow so I consented to the syntometrine injection, still didn't slow so the ambulance was called. Got to hospital and taken to labour ward where they wanted me to have a drip of ergometrine, I asked they left us for an hour so that we could talk and enjoy our daughter in peace for a bit (all got taken a bit out of context, visit from head of midwives, Dr, shift change and new head of midwives  ) eventually everyone takes off their silly heads and just leaves us alone so we got an hour peace and quiet before the put the drip in. We were in all night, long story short, not too bad as OH was allowed to stay the whole time, finally getting discharged at just after 13:00 on the 23rd.
Holly is brilliant, feeding like a trooper and my milk is already coming in, Austin loves her and has been doing his best to help out when asked but he is still a crazy 2 and half year old so he is having to be told to calm down a bit. I don't think I would change anything, even if it wasn't "perfect".
I'm definitely in the babymoon period

:hohoho: don't blame me! I was always going for a "y" but OH changed his mind in the hospital and then again when we got home! They call us women indecisive!
