The Book Thief

Postby Cadiva » Mon Aug 01, 2011 3:21 pm

Me again with another recommendation :) This one is a little bit unusual, by the fabulous Markus Zusak. Set in Nazi Germany under the Third Reich and just before World War II, the book is narrated by Death and concerns the lives of a bunch of children and their families.
Just an amazing book, I couldn't put it down as it gripped me from start to finish. So well written and a real twisting tale of life in an oppressive regime but it's not at all depressing to read. In fact, I'd go so far as to say it's a book which affirms the wonder of being alive and how no matter how bad it gets, there's always hope.

You can find it on Amazon - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Book-Thief-Mark ... dition_1_1

Zusak's I Am the Messenger is also brilliant - http://www.amazon.co.uk/I-am-Messenger- ... pd_sim_b_3

I've heard of it but didn't buy it as I wasn’t sure if it would be depressing, good to hear it's not :D
