Vintage sites for Kate! (the jabbery one)

Postby northernruth » Thu Aug 01, 2013 1:03 pm

Been chatting with Kate @JabberJabber about vintage shopping and I said I'd post some sites for her to have a look at.

There are a load of boutiques selling on ASOS marketplace, and that can be a good quick and easy way to find lots of vintage options. YOu can either browse boutiques or search eg dresses (be sure to tick the check box for "vintage"). You can also search by size. So for example the following is the result of a search for size 12 dresses:

https://marketplace.asos.com/women/dres ... pf=2&pt=90

They just recently had a sale night on and I bought a couple of dresses from there, one for about £12 and one about £16, the first was a cotton day dress (and a bit 40's in style, I feel very French Resistance in it!) and the second a real Last Days of Disco dress for nights out. These were from 5678 vintage and millesimevintage, although the latter doesn't really have much that I like.

A couple of sites I really rate (but that are more expensive) are Lovely's VIntage and Candy Says Vintage, both have dedicated sites

On both you can search by size I think.

A quick note about sizing - it's really important to measure yourself and to check measurements where given. Many vintage items come up small compared to today's sizings (for example I am a size 10-12 but often buy vintage 14 or 16). A good site will not only give you measurements but will also give you an approximation of modern sizing. If you are searching on ASOS it's a good idea to put a range of sizing so you can see all that might fit you.

Natural fibres are better than synthetic as synthetic can sometimes retain smells........but I have a couple of nylon/ polyester 70s dresses which I love.

It's a good idea if you have a think about what shape suits your body type - I generally can tell what will suit me before I get it in the post. Don't go for anything too fancy dress either, but equally I avoid anything that looks too much like you could have bought it in M&S.

And if it's not suitable, return within 7 working days with a polite note asking for a full refund including postage in accordance with the Distance Selling Regulations.

It's also REALLY handy if you can sew to do basic alterations.

And finally, if you don't fancy vintage clothing take a look at some of the jewellery available - I have some lovely pieces that were the price of a necklace from Accessorise but unusual and striking.

Hope that helps!!! If you let us know your size we could spam you with suggestions..........
