Flat nappy wrap for newborn in hot humid climate?

Postby Stef77 » Wed Aug 07, 2013 9:56 am

Hi ,

I am having my baby abroad as my hubby is on secondment in Ghana - pretty hot and humid out there, meaning my December baby will be a summer baby :-)

I decided to go re-usable as disposables are so expensive out there - and I would never know which sizes to stock when importing myself! So I got some fuzzybuns elite which should fit birth to potty, but maybe not on a tiny newborn? So I got a dozen muslins as a backup and now looking for a wrap.

Not sure if motherease rikki in xs is gonna be hot?

My first baby was just 5lbs so choice seems to be limited for this weight.

Thanks for your help.

Stef

Cloth is generally cooler than disposables as it's not as insulating as all the plastic and chemicals. I saw some nice looking tie on cloth nappies from India on a local group recently, can't find any pics now, unfortunately :(

I'd imagine you'd be good with any wrap, or also, strange as it might sound, wool covers. They're fairly self regulating so pretty good for warmer climates.

My January baby is a summer baby (we're in Sydney); he was in cloth as a newborn without any issues. The wraps I used were Blueberry, Wee Notions, Baby Beehinds, Dunk N Fluff, some I knocked up using the Darling Diaper pattern (very easy to do, if you sew) and wool. But he was massive, so thinking back to my skinny minnie First Born, I used Nature Babies and found they worked well for her. :)

your fuzzi bunz elite probably will fit tiny as the elastic can be tightened a long way, I've had a few ladies use them from birth.

I like Bummis superbrite wraps for new borns, have handy flaps to hold a muslin in place as well if you fold it into a pad.

The coolest covers are wool soakers, as they allow evaporation to take place, and that is cooling. That could well be your best way to go. Research has shown the temperature inside a washable nappy with a PUL cover is 1ºC cooler than in a disposable, and with a wool cover instead of PUL, it\s 2C cooler.
There's a thread about it here
