A couple of weeks ago we started digging up a rose bed along a wall that we didn't even know existed when we arrived in our over grown garden! It has been so hot that all we have been doing is keeping the grass out of the area (which I think has been good as we have cleared more roots than we would have!). Today it was cooler so I got stuck in and finished the job. I read that an eco way to keep weeds away is to do a layer of brown cardboard then earth then mulch so I thought I'd try that. The roses are a bit sad as I've been so late putting them in but normally they should be white / pink / white. So this is what I did today:
I put all the roses in the ground and gave them a good soak then cut out all the rose spaces from the cardboard:
After I got all the cardboard in I started doing a layer of soil on top:
I then covered it al with a layer of mulch (just grass cuttings) and all done :
