2020 veggie patch!

Postby clothmama » Fri Mar 27, 2020 12:53 pm

Well spring is here and as we're stuck at home we are really going to try to get a good veggie patch going this year.

I have black plastic'ed 2 areas, cardboard and strawed others and I also have a little hoop house pu for my lettuces to try to keep the chickens off! Big jobs at the moment are getting a fence up asap so that we can plant without worrying about the little boogers pulling everything up! This week we also moved one of the 1000L tanks from the house and made it lower than the one still contected to the gutters so that we can just run the water from one to the other and have water right on hand (it is very expensive here and has been an issue with the garden in previous years trying to not use too much and the tanks were too far away!). I have also bought some extra hoops and am going to cover with fleece so I can get my Swiss Chard in quickly!

End of Jan I planted seeds for :
- corriander
-dill
-asparagus
-rainbow swiss chard
- other stuff that hasnt' come up (old seeds)
- rocket

Mid March:
- Planted 12 lettuce seedlings
- Planted out rocket
- J planted some chilli seeds

26/3:
Planted seeds for:
- 2 varieties of cucumber
- Butternut (from self collected seeds from 2 years ago so not sure how they will work but they seemed healthy enough looking)

To do:
- carry on planting seeds regularly - very important in next 2 weeks as now 6 weeks prior to last frost date
- Fence garden
- mow and try to get on top of weeds
- weed and mulch the berries / currant bushes
- trim the red berry bush that is in the garden (not edible but lovely in the winter!) which is going wild!

Sounds like you've got loads planted @clothmama well done!!!
I only have 2 raised beds in situ ( out of the 5 planned) and they've only been in place two weeks so not much planted yet. I need to start my 2020 thread.

I thought I'd share a pic of my seedling shelf - as of Monday with chicken proof string!

And my potting table where I'm constantly it seems at the moment either planting seeds or transferring seedlings into bigger pots!

Rémy's tiny toy watering can is just perfect!

All looking and sounding good @clothmama. So far we've got cauliflower and broad beans coming through. We've also planted chives, parsley, basil and rosemary in pots. In the newest cleared bed we've just planted rocket, greek cress, kale, red mustard & green mustard. Fingers crossed it all comes through.

29/01 :
- coriander
-dill
-asparagus
-rainbow swiss chard
- other stuff that hasnt' come up (old seeds)
- rocket
-Cosmos

Mid March:
- Planted 12 lettuce seedlings
- Planted out rocket
- J planted some chilli seeds

26/3:
Planted seeds for:
- 2 varieties of cucumber
- Butternut (from self collected seeds from 2 years ago so not sure how they will work but they seemed healthy enough looking)

28/3:
More seeds started:
- 3 varieties of lettuce
- 6 more butternuts (from neighbours dad)
- 6 Courgette - Black Beauty
- spring onions
- French marigolds

Mid April:
-Beetroot (4 per module as per Charles Dowding method)
-tomatoes (3 varieties - 2 cherry and one bigger)
-zinnias

Mid April Notes:
- Great results from the Swiss Chard, I have more than I know what to do with! Some now in garden under cover from chooks and some moved into little pots.
- 12 lettuces planted last month doing well so going to start harvesting the leaves (instead of the whole plant a la Charles Dowding. Means you only need to do 5 lettuce plantings a year for continuous supply).
-About 6 asparagus come up and doing well. There are even very tiny asparaguses!
- Rocket planted out a month ago but hasn't worked at all - not sure why, next to lettuce that is doing well. Seedlings too small when planted out?? Not enough watering in very dry spring?
- ALL butternuts came up, both my own and my neighbours which shocked me! I think I have 30+ plants :hohoho:
-Cucumbers also all came up and looking good
- Only one variety of lettuce worked (old seeds I think) and have had bad luck with them drying out / jumped on by chickens so I think I'll have to start again.

I think that is it for the minute :loopy: :giggle: :giggle:

Early April:
Planted potatoes - 90 day variety so ready for early July

Mid April:
-Beetroot (4 per module as per Charles Dowding method)
-tomatoes (3 varieties - 2 cherry and one bigger)
-zinnias

Early May:
Planted seedlings for tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers

25/5:
Planted out:
Tomato and cucumber and 1 courgette seedlings

May notes:
Bit of a disaster with the seedlings, the chickens seemed to have killed all my butternut plants   and I really wanted to get lots of them in. The later seedlings I've planted have also not worked very well so need to restart with a lot of them.
