Talk to me about carpet cleaners! Update Pg2

With 2 adults, 2 children, a Grandad & a puppy all under one roof... Plus an allotment, frequent dog walks whatever the weather & general children spills.... The beige carpet in the lounge is getting some abuse!

We've hired a rug doctor today and it's made a huge difference, but considering the size of our lounge (plus the rest of the house!) I think investing in our own carpet cleaner will help with 'maintainance'

I know the domestic ones are as good as the rug doctor, but looking for something which we can use regularly to stay ontop of the muck!

Any suggestions/ recommendations?

We've got a Vax that I use monthly on the carpets downstairs.

I second the Vax, we have an upright carpet Vax we got in the Argos sale for £135 down from £300. It's awesome, I use it all the time. You do need to use the Vax shampoo (well I do anyway) and that's £15-£19 per bottle.

@docmaggoo How long did it take your carpets to dry today, we need to use it on ours asap!

We have a bissell which I borrowed from my FIL, I use it every one/two months and its good. Makes our carpet cream carpet like new.

Thanks ladies.
I'll have a look at those. They don't appear as expensive as I first thought!

@jabberjabber
As long as you go over it with the machine after you've finished to pull as much moisture out, it'll dry overnight.
At the moment they are 'tacky' but walk able on just 4 hours after doing them.
There's no wet smell at all.
We've used the rug doctor quite a few times over the years in rented houses.

We are thinking of hiring the Doctor as well :D
We have a vax as well and whilst they make a bit of a difference I don't rate it that much, maybe my expectations are a bit high :giggle:

We used to use a Vax carpet cleaner regulalrly, have a black lab, walk through the woods, etc everyday & biege carpets (have no idea what I was thinking!) and IMO the Vax wasn't great but the Rug Doctor was so much better!

I guess am saying I wouldn't bother with buying one! However in saying that I have heard good reports about Bissell machines, cant be specific about the model tho!

We have a Bissell. It's OK, although ours has just broken after 7 years :-( . We've generally used it to clean up specific big messes (mostly baby vomit) rather than general maintenance though. It does help with general grime and small marks, but not bigger stains ime. But we are not kind to our carpets lol!
