Home Education ??

Postby juboo752 » Fri Jul 09, 2010 6:31 am

Dh and i have pretty much decided that we would like to HE Lottie, especially now that they will be closing the very good school that we chose to send Charlie and Daisy too over our local school

But we do have our concerns, not necessary with the education side of thing because i think we can pretty much cover this, certainly her primary years anyway :D However the problem lies with the socialisation aspect of her education. I asked each one of our children what they most enjoyed about school, their answers were, their friends, playtime and sports. All of which we would find difficult to full-fill for Lottie if she was home educated. Because of where we live, i am not sure there is much of a HE network and clubs are/would minimal due to cost and where we live :-?

Any info and experience on this would be gratefully received, we are very keen for this to work but want to make sure we have explored all aspects before committing :D

And any other info and links of website would be great too

Great would love to share :D

Have pm'd you the details of another froum that appears to have quite a community of HE'ers but from there i have come across this useful website which has already answered a few of my questions :wine:

This one is for HE in Scotland, but there must be a similar one for England i would think

Hiya

Back from my hols and have just seen this.

Don't worry about socialisation. It doesn't have to be a problem at all. It's worth remembering that school is not a natural form of socialisation for children. Spending a lot of time with other people the same age as you who don't share much in the way of interests doesn't teach socialisation, it does encourage anti-social behaviour and bullying though. HE children live and learn in the community and learn to socialise by spending time with small groups of mixed age children and adults (as well as having some time on their own which is very important too). This makes them very sociable and more effective learners too. Of course they can still play with school educated friends after school, at the weekends and during school holidays as well as go to swimming and other clubs where they will spend time with children and adults who share similar interests to them. Clubs don't have to be expensive, there's usually things you can do cheaply or even for free.

You've already found Schoolhouse which is good because the law in Scotland is very different from the rest of the UK.

There's lots of resources and a forum here too:

There are plenty of HE'ers in the north of Scotland, so you might find a few families close enough to meet up with. Actually, come to think of it, I'm pretty sure there is at least one other HE family where you are.
