Sewing with terry towelling?

Postby clothmama » Sun Nov 16, 2014 5:37 pm

I was trying to sew some terry (it is a thick bath towel) for some nappy making and my :sewing: had a total tantrum like has never been seen in the nearly 5 years I've had her. Is there a trick to sewing towelling that I don't know about? I'm too scared to try again now but really need to make some more nappies! :sewing:

Ideas on a postcard really appreciated!

I tried once... Nightmare :gaah: :furious: :furious:

All I was trying to do was see name labels into some old tots boys cotton nappies when James started nursery!!!

The sewing machine kept chewing the terry towel up... Never found a solution :(

Try sewing it with some tracing paper or similar under the fabric that you can rip away once you've sewn.
And clean out the fluff regularly!!

What @sim said. I have made paper bags out of greaseproof paper before to completely enclose it :/
You can also hoover the towelling first to get rid of as much fluff as possible.

How many layers of terry are you sewing together? I have never had a problem.

What size needle are you using?

@Bernadette I think it was just 2 but it is mega thick (Target grandeur range :giggle: ) towelling. I think I had a 90 needle in, what would you use? I thought I'd try with the overlocker too and see if that copes better!
