Not babbling

Postby victoriaw » Tue Jan 12, 2010 11:03 pm

Antonia isn't babbling yet. She makes noises - mainly vowel sounds, but no mama dada gaga sounds. HV said last time I saw her in Dec that she was concerned and maybe we ought to refer her to hearing specialist.

I'm convinced nothing is wrong with her hearing, but I am worried now.

Is it really that unusual for 11 months not to be babbling?

I can't really remember with Isabelle but she was quite delayed with speech partly due to prematurity and also I think the glue ear issues started quite early...

Grace is only 9months and has been babbling for ages though and copies sounds we make too and connects sounds with things although I don't know how advanced/normal that is as Isabelle is not a good guideline...

Does she laugh?

She's probably right to be concerned then I'm afraid... Grace was chuckling from 11wks and Isabelle 4months...
It might be something as simple as glue ear or similar to in which you know she can hear but the sounds may be all muffled and joined together meaning she can't distinguish sounds sufficiently to copy/mimic...

Actually I've just checked Isabelle's book and she was definately babbling before 9months sorry...

Charlie isnt babbling yet, Jaden wasnt at her age either. She is laughing though (sort of giggles when you play with her). Shes just been diagnosed with glue ear. Thinking back ,Jaden had bad ears too but coz we didnt have a HV I didnt know there was anything wrong :-? Gotta see the doc tomorrow about getting his hearing checked.

I think it would be worth getting her hearing checked anyway, just to rule out any problems there *might* be. She may just come on leaps and bounds in the time you wait for the appt tho

She did have an ear infection a month or so ago, and the doc looked in her ears a week later and said they looked fine. Can you 'see' glue ear? (sorry, don't really have a clue what it is, except I know that some of my cousins had it... just off to google now).
Seeing paediatrician next week anyway (for her weight (or lack of)) so will talk to her about it.
:(

charlie has what i thought were very waxy ears, shes always got wax coming out, sometimes in big globs! i know thats a sign. but im not sure if all children have that. apparently it gets worse after an infection too (which both of mine have just gotten over).
If your lo goes for a hearing test they'll just look in her ears witha special instrument and they'll see it straight away if she does have it. If not, then its just a case of wait n see what time brings

It'll be ok, its easily treatable

All mine were babbling by then. Phebie had hearing problems but she still made sounds. I'd get her checked out just for your own piece of mind.

I'm also thinking it must be related to teeth. Antonia doesn't have any yet. (although she has spent all night awake and woken up with temperature and bright red cheeks... so ..maybe finally on the way..)

Thanks for the comments, even though it's made me really worried now. I'll speak to the HV and get her to make the referral.
