Does anyone know anything about them?

Phebie has yet another ear infection the poor little darling (her 21st) and our dr has given us a referral to a ENT specialist and she mentioned Grommets. The appointment is on the 22nd April.

they stick them in your ear drum!

i had the op done late when i was 9 yrs old. they drill a small hole then the gromit holds it open until the ear drum heals up about 18months later when the small plastic gromit falls out your ear - i think i still have mine in a small tin at mums.

the relief i felt instantly was imense and i could hear again or properly actually for the first time in my life and ear infections i think became a thing of the past. the only prob when i had mine done was you were not allowed to get water in your ears until they were out so that meant no swimming or washing my own hair for a couple of years.

my sis also had the op round the same time as me but she is 4 yrs younger

Thats what we were thinking with Pheb she sometimes gets confused if things sound similiar, eg she can point to all her body parts but when it comes to ears and eyes she gets a bit confused. Didn't know if it was just because she got confused innocently or she cant really hear properly. Her speech is know where near as good as what Hannahs was at her age but didn't know if that was simply because shes a second child and not as much one on one time iyswim.

I started school 3 days before my 5th birthday not being able to say a whole load of words - eg yay yo was radio, sotnay was sausage - I was just saying things the way they sounded to me. I also had loads of ringing, whistling and watery sounds in my ears - I can remember it from about 3 yrs old and boy the pain of the crackling every time I had an ear infection was unbearable.

Words like shoulder and soldier confused me for years - teens even and now I have to make a real effort at which is which.

It just amazes me it took so long for anyone to pick it up back then - but in those days Only because my sister was having her health check and the health visitor told my mum my sister was deaf and Mum looked at her and laughed saying if you think that one is deaf check my other one (I was on school hols), so we were both treated at the same time.

She actually doesn't eat any diary, she has a protien intolerance and doesn't like oranges Do you have any links or info on the remedies?

my sis had more than one pair...and they gave enormous relief, both from constant ear infections...and a little help to her hearing (she is partially deaf anyway) and my neice too, in Israel they do them as a Day case under heavy sedation rather than in patient and general anasthetic as my sis had here...my sis says the relief they give her lo (now in huge...and she has less ear infects while they are in too....again the relief doesn't last...and i think she has already had 2 sets, but the proceedure is very minor...
