I don't know my LO's blood group

Postby Mungo » Tue Nov 15, 2011 7:48 pm

I'm sure I ought to know it  It's not in his red book or any other record that I can find. I feel like a bad mummy for not knowing something so basic. Am I looking in the wrong place? How can I find out?

I'm pretty sure they don't ever tell you. I'm not even sure if they test for it routinely. I know that ds1 is rhesus positive as I had to have anti-d after he was born, but apart from that I have no idea!

It's not routinely tested.

It's only done on babies when they are born if there is a medical reason (ie baby unwell & might need blood) or if the mum is rhesus negative (because if baby is rh+ then the mum needs anti-D)

If at any point in your child's life they need blood/blood products- then they are tested at that point. Even if you know the blood group, it's still tested again to see if there are any special antibodies.

As a student I was curious, so started donating blood and found out then!

Unless lo has ever needed to have tests done why would they know it?

Scarlett has never had blood taken from her body so its not known yet.

Oh phew, I was starting to get worried cos I thought I ought to know it! DS had the routine heel prick tests and they also tested his platelet levels when he was born (I had low platelets in pregnancy) but I don't remember anyone telling me his blood group.

I don't know DDs either, although I am curious. Tbh I'm not even sure I know what DH's is! I only know mine because I give blood.

Do they not do the heel test in the U.K before you leave the hospital?

Scarlett had heal pricks whilst in hosp but only due to me having Gestational Diabetes - there isnt enough bleeding to test anything and the cotton wool etc was just put in a contamination bin there and then.

No blood for testing has ever been taken from her so far.
