We will be getting new ones tho Scarlett's has never had an accident etc on it - i wouldnt like to take the risk.

I used http://babymattressesonline.co.uk/ last time and will do so again - we have the mothercare top of the range mattress and it was half the cost of in store as these people make them.

Jax has Tegan's cot and mattress, she only slept on it for 9 months, always with a mattress protector and it is like new! I didn't even consider buying new?

I think like most aspects of parenting this is very much down to personal choice!

I am however, the ultimate in paranoid. We had a movement monitor, and I took the bacteria thing to the nth degree. Sheets changed daily (on her cot/Moses basket, and pram) and folded muslin or flat sheet wrapped round mattress under her head and changed at every single nap. I still forbid outdoor clothes in bed.

Oh my goodness! I feel like such a scummy Mummy now! As others have said, it's personal choice. Children share cots/mattresses at nursery don't they? I'd imagine it's the very early days that are most important, although presumably hospitals don't have a new mattress in each crib or on each bed between patients?

No, and i was thinking the same about prams - babies use 2nd hand prams etc and sleep in them.. but i think the point is its night after night theyre in the one at home and i should also imagine hospital ones are fully plastic wrapped like the beds are, so theres no bacteria can get in etc.

Not a scummy mummy at all Danika, this is very extreme IMO. Isaac's crib/basket bedding was changed several times a day due to constantly bringing up milk but Jonah's weren't. Also both boys had naps in their outdoor clothes. It is possible to be too fussy over bacteria  but like already said it's very much down to personal choice and what each parent feels comfortable with.

I know, I'm a freak!

Not obsessive in other things, just this! And possibly tidiness. Ok, and laundry. But that is all.

Thanks for all your replies ladies, good to see everyone's differing opinions. We will be getting a new mattress, as I just couldn't live with myself if the worst did happen and I would always blame myself, whether you knew that was the cause or not personally i would blame it :? does seem an awful waste of money when we bought a top of the range one last time. We will definitely be shopping around for a mattress to get a better deal his time!

Shall check out the website you suggested @Rox thanks :)

I've used the same one for both my girls. Amelie co-slept in our bed until 7mths & I was quite happy for her to go into the cot with the same mattress at that age. I must admit that not having money to replace the mattress had some bearing on that decision. If we were to have another baby, I would buy new but only because I think the mattress has reached the end of it's life now.

When we do buy a new one, it will be natural fibres. The toxins in mattresses are quite scary. It surprises me that they recommend new mattress to prevent sids but say nothing about the toxins given off by mattress :-?
