I don't think that's cheating. I know when I was debating colours I looked at lots of other pictures of the square to check I was happy that my ideas would work.

That looks really good Christi!

I have managed the first 3 rows, I had to redo the first 2 a couple of times as wasn't happy with the join and stuffed up the 2nd once (not reading the pattern properly as I was rushing!). I found the standing double crochet joining tutorial the Dedri recommended really helpful for row 3 (and I guess all the rest that I can use it on):

Been a while since I worked in pure cotton too and forgot that it is a bit tricky as the plys are much less together than with wool! No wonder I had trouble when I was first learning as it was a ball of cotton I bought!

I had a look after I posted and there are also instructions for doing DC and HDC on there - I think it will make for much easier changes. I also like that she says to just crochet over the yarn from the round before which is much easier than what the other ways are - I hate sewing in ends!

Sorry about the terrible light in my house!
I've finished up to row 11 - not done the alternative 12th row yet as I want to see how the other comes out, I think I'll fiddle more when I have more squares done. I'm at a smidge under 25 cm unblocked.
