Pesky magpies solution!

Ever since we got here we have had terrible trouble with magpies on our deck. Apparently the people who lived here before used to feed them  there can be up to 30 of them and if we have food out the can be particularly cheeky! Chasing off with a broom has had limited success and I even had to send Louis inside as they were so going to get his toast last week!

I came up with a solution of hanging garlands to stop them but wasn't sure what to use until I spotted some predrilled shells! So far so good with the test one we've had up for a week so we carried on this morning and I'm so pleased they look excellent as well as keeping the scary birds away! :yahoo:

ooh what a cool idea and they looks so pretty as well.
I did have a :giggle: at the thought of you running about with a broom
We were watching some magpies today and they are so clever and bold! one was really manky though so we decided it was a pikey magpie :giggle:

Lovely!
We had a similar issue when we lived in Tecoma, and found wind chimes helped too.

@Kirstyh Aussie magpies are a lot bigger and meaner than UK ones. People get injured during nesting season by magpies swooping and attacking. It's not just our bugs, snakes and sea creatures ...:giggle:

Pikey magpie made me :barflol: they are really clever - it is quite scary (then I have bird issues anyway :lookround: :giggle: ). They have full on fights on the lawn with beak gnashing and everything :hohoho: I get so cross though when they pick on the beautiful galahs (grey and pink cockatoo variety) and Rosellas (the gorgeous multi couloured ones) they are such bullies :x As far as the running around with the broom I'm so with you, have been in hysterics more than once watching Joel do it :hohoho:

Some people have to wear icecream containers on their heads if they have to walk to work past nests and it is most common to see bike helmets with eyes drawn on the back and lots of long cable ties sticking out the top to keep them away! I have got some wind chimes but they annoy J :loopy: so they are not hanging!

Successful in the whole although J has spotted the odd one still landing. We are now considering running a horizontal fishing wire just above the top railing to further deter them!
