Milk Free diet?

Postby sophie90 » Wed Jun 20, 2012 11:50 am

Leo is lactose intolerant and has been on a milk free diet since he was about 20 (ish) days old.
Recently we went to the dietician and he still has to follow the same diet (No re-introducing milk yet) We bought him some almond milk recently and hazelnut milk and he loves them!!
We want to get all of us trying to follow the same diet as Leo so he doesnt feel left out but what can we use in tea/coffee? Neither me or Dh like the milks in hot drinks!! We were pleasantly surprised and liked them on their own to drink but seriously were not impressed when we tried having a cuppa with them!

I am dairy and soya free and TBH you get used to it. I hated all of them to start with, even on cereal and as a drink on their own. :puke: Now however, I actually dislike the taste of cows milk so you will definitely adapt to the change if you stick with it! I prefer almond milk in hot drinks to oatly (am not all that keen on hazelnut milk at all).

I did wonder if it was going to be a case of just getting used to it!!
We Haven't tried oatmilk, were can we buy it? When we looked at the supermarket they only had the almond and the hazlenut.
I like the hazelnut better than the almond :giggle: I think it's a bot chocolately!

I get Oatly from the supermarket. They do both a chilled and a longlife version (Some supermarkets only stock one or the other though)

I only have soya in tea but drink rice milk. All availabe in supermarkets. Try the longlife milk section as opposed to the free from bit ;)

The soya with the least vanilla test are better in tea and coffee. So usually the supermarket own brand sweetened ones.

Yeah, I had been looknig in the free from and regular milk section (as thats where we found the almond and hazelnut) Will have a look in the longlife section when we next go shopping :)

I haven't trie regular soy milk since I was younger and I hated it!! Not sure how I would take to it now :-? Suppose there is only one way to find out!

What is rice milk like? I have never tried it!!

I love rice milk. Its thinner more like skimmed milk but quite sweet too. Fresh cilled soya is nice too. :D

Mmm it sounds quite yummy :)
I am quite nervous about trying the soya milk because the last time I had it I was about 11/12 and I seriously hated it, I am still going to give it a go tho, dont want my little chunk feeling left out whilst we're all sipping regular milk and eating chocies!

I think it's going to be hardest on Zach because he has had 2years of getting used to cows milk/chocolate and regular yogurts etc and wont understand why we have to change, at least me and Dh know why we're doing it which makes it easier.
