OK so the idea of green smoothies how I understand it is that you start with your base fruits - things like apple, pear, banana, berries - anything really! Then you can add superfood type things like chai seeds (must get some of these they are amazing - seriously high in calcium and protein etc) etc. Then the final ingredient is your green leafy veg - things like spinach, kale, bok choy etc. You need to add water to it as well for the blender to be able to liquidise it all. You can also use coconut water or almond milk but you aren't supposed to use dairy like yogurt. There needs to be enough calories (like 350) per serve so that your body doesn't think you are starving it and hold onto the fat so you need to make sure that it is decently packed with ingredients!
This is how I made our smoothie for this morning (2 serves):
Got all my ingredients together: 1 banana, 1 apple, 1 orange, 1 small yellow lime (from a friends tree - delicious!), frozen berries, top of a celery stalk, a bunch of bok choy, 2 tablespoons of a 'gentle fibre' mix (things like pshyllium husks)
Choped them and popped the fruit in the blender, I put the watery things like the orange in first and also added about 1/2 cup of water and sprinkled the fibre on top:
Bzzzzzzzz bzzzzzzzzz
All blended up and looking like a berry smoothie so in go the greens:
So in the end because of the berries I use the colour is not so much green as a browny berry colour with some flecks!
I think if you had a white fruit base (say apple, pear, banana) then your smoothie would be very green!
It was really yum, Mr CM was not happy about the celery as he hates it but I actually thought that it make it really light and fresh tasting. Other mornings we've just had spinich so far!
@Soupdragon I see what you are saying about the faddy thing (you cranky old thing
) and I tend not to ever try faddy 'diets' as everyone I've ever tried hasn't worked but as you know (you've seen me recently!) I desperately need to loose weight and get healthier. I felt these were a healthy way to start moving in the right direction, and amazingly the mornings that I've started with one of these (have missed the odd morning since I've started having them) I've felt better all day and wanted to eat healthier all day
