Washing frequency - is 3 days too long?

Postby Mungo » Fri Sep 23, 2011 6:44 pm

I've always washed my nappies every other day and it's suited me fine. Now I'm back at work and do longer hours on a Monday, so don't have time to wash nappies on that day. For the last couple of weeks I've been washing them Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, so I never have to wash on a Monday. But it feels really wasteful to wash one day's worth on their own, so I've been wondering if I should wash on Saturday and leave til Tuesday... But is that too long? Will smells/stains set in? And would it help if I rinse Sunday's nappies in the washing machine on Sunday night but then don't actually wash them til Tuesday?

It should be fine to leave them. I would give the nappies a quick rinse with a shower head into the toilet (or a bucket) before sticking them in the nappy bucket to be sure you don't get urine stains.

I think I'd worry about them going mouldy. Also does your machine have a short cycle? I wash my nappies on the 'super quick' setting and then follow that with extra rinses... Because this wash is quite economical, both environmentally and financially I don't have to worry too much about putting less than a full load on.

I'd rinse before I put them in the bucket. But three days should be fine.

Ours have managed fine with 3 days between washes. We usually wash every other day (because bucket full!) but sometimes it is longer.

Just do what PP say, short rinse before washing them.

^^This^^
We've got a washing machine with a 9kg load drum, so 2 days worth of nappies only half fills the drum :giggle: so we regularly wash every three days.
The only thing I rinse is the nappies (or liners) if they're badly soiled - usually when Erin's been hitting the prunes &/or brambles  - and we've had no problems with soiling.
