We have chucks and would agree that its best to let them have some soft ground to run around on - you could fence off an area and put some chipped bark for them to dig around on. They do like to create bare ground patches by digging for grubs, once they've got a bare patch they love to dustbath in it but you could create one for them by filling a litter tray with dirt or ash from a fire if you have a real one. They do poo a lot - its good fertiliser for the garden but very strong - you shoulnd't put it directly onto plants as it burns them - better to let it compost down a bit and mix it in with some other organic matter.
They are great little things to keep and very rewarding - I get very attached to ours as they all have their own personalities and are very friendly.
