 Welcome to CNT. I would get a few of different brands/types to see what you get on with best before commiting to buying a load of the same brand that you might not get on with at all. There are a few websites that sell trial packs and even some that hire out trial packs. which is a good way for you to see which nappies suit you better. Babykind used to do a service where you can send back what you didn't get on with for a partial refund (70% I think).

 hello and welcome to the tree

Yes I think everyone finds it a complete minefield to start off with and we ve all learned lots from experience and trial and error.

I would also go for two parters although I ordered one of those trial packs and got the teeny fit which I ll give a try :) so small and cute!

As everyone has said you ll not know what will suit baby til they arrive. I always suggest a mixture and also some flat nappies for those early days till you find out their shape. Flats will fit any baby ;)
I also always found paper liners stuck to my dd's bottom making them useless.

Good luck and have fun :D

Thanks both, really helpful to get all this advice.

I've been reading loads about nappies and breastfeeding lately that I can't think of anything else! :hohoho:

Are the first lot of poos so messy that it's best to use disposable liners? Was planning on getting reusable ones, but read that it's really sticky.

Do some people use disposable nappies initially because of this?

Said to DH I need a doll to practice on as well as I've never changed a nappy in my life!

I have been known to try out terry folds on a teddy :giggle:

Nappies aren t that tricky honestly, compared to getting a small baby into a vest or sleeves etc

The first meconium poos are fine and come out in the wash, it's the normal poo that stains ;)

Xx

Thanks for that :) Now where's that teddy. Actually I have cats and a dog, maybe they will oblige

I've hardly ever even handled a baby, but feel strangely calm about the whole thing. Probably just tired from all my night time toilet trips.

Hello!

I bought lots of different nappies to use on my baby as soon as she was born so I could see what worked. I used some immediately and when I washed them I discovered that meconium dyes everything in the wash! Everything including muslins etc came out a nasty brownish colour! So watch out for that.

I also discovered that I couldn't use the nappies I'd bought on my baby at all for 6 weeks because she liked to sit in a completely folded up position (like in the womb) and cloth nappies were too thick around her waist. As she was a big baby to start with, lots of small sizes I'd bought were then too small and therefore not used. So if you can wait to see what your baby is like in both size and temperament you might save lots of money!

Now a few months on I have tried all our nappies and I would say two parters are definitely more reliable. Our pockets can leak quite a lot and I'm getting v bored of stuffing them! I use little lambs bamboo at night which have been great but the Velcro is tired already whereas the bamboozles Velcro looks like new. Paper liners stuck to the bum giving nappy rash whilst little lambs fleece liners seem to make the poo stick to them and away from the bum. (In our experience) Little lamb bamboo boosters are an absolute must for us. I use them all the time. Wraps wise try and get ones with two leg gussets for extra security and also ones which adjust at the leg and waist are great (motherease, thirsties and gen-y are my faves).

I'm still discovering which two parter is best for day time (bamboo nappies take forever to dry so I don't use all the time). I'm sure others can recommend those. When I get sick of my pockets leaking I use a disana tie on with bamboo boosters but they are definitely not for everyone although I think they're cute!

Hope that's some help......
Good luck!

Thank you - that is really very useful. Makes me wonder if we should use newborn disposables initially to deal with the meconium and also see what size the baby is - we have no idea. I was only about 5lbs,but DH was about 10lbs!

Definitely swaying towards 2 parters from reading lots of posts and reviews and liking the sound of Bamboozles stretchies, but just worry about the MF in them as have heard they can cause leakage.
Also thinking that LL fleece liners and boosters sound good and Motherease wraps, as you suggest.
It's a bit confusing knowing what nappies are part of a two part system. Was looking at OWW ones and can't figure out what they are, as surely you don't put a wrap over as they are non plain.

One thing I did use from birth and that i love is Cheeky Wipes reusable wipes. It's a bit of an outlay at the start because i find you need quite a lot of wipes but i think they are fab. I hate using normal wipes as you end up using loads and they are not so effective. Cotton wipes (better than bamboo for bums) have a good grip and you can pretty much get all the poo off with one. If it takes more, who cares because they're not adding to landfill etc. Really recommend....x
