Help with chaffing on legs?

Postby MollyMoppet » Tue Jul 16, 2013 8:23 am

Hi everyone,
I wonder if anyone can offer me advice.

My LO is 6.5 mths and chubby build. In general I love using cloth nappies but we have problems with chaffing around her thighs. We use little lamb bamboo (she's already in size 2, the size 1s were causing bad chaffing so we had to change at 4.5 mths) and bamboozle stretchies. It doesn't help that I air dry them so the fabric has gone all hard.

I've started using 2 large microfleece liners lengthways so they stick out of the nappy & protect her legs. It's a pain in the bum tho. I was thinking of making little fleece shorts that I could just slip on and then put the nappy on as usual (also a pain cos I'm not very handy!).

So a few questions:

1. Would tumble drying for softness make a difference?
2. Is the fleecy pants idea crazy?
3. Any chance they'll chaff less as her legs lengthen out & lose the fat?

Or am I stuck with it?? :-?

Thanks!

I think fleece or wool will help-providing if used as a wrap over the nappy-not under. Dont know the nappies you use but i stay away from one that have a frill type finish at the leg (serged). Tumble drying will help loads im sure. Hope it gets sorted soon  x

I used to get that with Louis only if his nappy was really wet, I used to use fleece liners and they would help. Not sure about the fleece shorts idea although it is actually a very cool idea I'm not sure if it would work or if you would end up with wicking (I'm thinking that may be the case!). I agree with Dora, maybe have a bit of a play with some other nappy styles and see if perhaps a different style will help you, you can pick up second hand nappies for a good price on the classifieds.

Thanks ladies. Haven't I already gone and bought a sizable stash of 2 brands at no small cost!

I'll try changing her more frequently first, but since the legs will already be damp before the rest of the nappy has absorbed much I wonder if that will help.

Certainly easier than making fleecy pants from scratch though :D

Is it definitely the nappies? Couldbit be the wraps? My chunky boy can't wear Motherease, totsbots etc the only wraps we've tried that don't leave nasty marks are Blueberry wraps. Also, front fastening nappies don't work for him, side snaps fit much better around his legs.

Yeah I have the blueberry wraps as well, the marks are too high up to be that.

Side fastening? Didn't know they existed. Sounds like a great idea. Which do you use?

Tumble drying could help, the nappies will definitely be softer than line drying. Give sidesnap nappies a try, they are more forgiving on chunky thighs!

Try just finishing them off in the dryer to soften them. Your could also try fastening slightly looser, and folding the booster in half and putting it in the wet zone - in my DS2 I fold them to the front and the nappy lasts much longer.

Thanks all. If I fasten them looser they tend to gape at the front so I'll just have to experiment!
