How much does a disposable nappy weigh?

Postby MrC » Thu Apr 29, 2010 6:33 am

Nobody's going to admit to having any right? :D

But if you do have a disposable nappy lying around (someone left them at your house or something) could you weigh it and post the result. A few different brands and sizes would be good.

What's the madman doing now?

Well, it's for a stats page for the nappies saved from landfill tickers. Just a simple thing with a cumulative tally of all nappies saved by ticker users, the weight, volume and energy savings etc.

While I'm at it what's the approximate cost of 1 kw/h of electricity and 1 cubic meter of water in the UK?

If anyone's interested the current cumulative total over 137 tickers is 368377 nappies saved from landfill!

Well done. I am somewhat amazed at how few children using cloth it is going to take to get to a million. Anyone know how big a pile of a million nappies is and how long it would take to get to the top?

Cant help with the weight of a sposie but our electricity tariff is £0.14649 per Kilowatthour - does that make sense? Im in Northern Ireland, so it might be different to the rest of the UK.

Edited to say - thats some amount of nappies 8-)

Just weighed a pampers active fit  to be about 1oz. Which I think it about 28g.

Though a wet one will weigh much more. Connor went to sleep in a sposie as I was ill last night so could weigh that when he wakes.

Wow. So at 28g we're already at 10.3 tonnes of disposable nappies.

I wonder if that's a heavy nappy or not? Any others?

In comparison, people in the UK throw away 9 million disposable nappies a day, 3 billion a year. :(

Remember that once the nappy is filled it weighs considerably more. If you are calculating what has been diverted from landfill, you will need to take account of that. Councils in the UK have data on the tonnage of disposable nappies diverted from and in landfill in their area. Perhaps the WRAP website will have more information?
