we're having this- anything over the cord keeps it wet and smelly, anything under bumps it, wraps go on it, and wool bits get in it! am using a folded down pampers, which just about stays under it but really want him back in cloth. When I can I give him time with just a fitted and no wrap or trousers/sleepsuit so it gets air. The cord fell of last night (yay!) but it's still pretty grim. Got some antiseptic powder from midwife to dry it out, this helps a lot.

Is it just blood or is there any pus/is it smelly?

Jake's belly button did get infected so we had to get some cream from the GP, they also told us to clean it (with cooled boiled water) and dry it at every nappy change. Jake's looked pretty nasty and smelled bad :( after a few days though it was fine, still bled for a while though, I think that's pretty normal
