My preloved 'rule' is coming to an end!

Postby jclmellor » Wed Nov 02, 2011 8:21 pm

for christmas my sister has asked to buy DD a customised wn that she will design. it would be lovely to have a nappy with DD's name or date of birth on, but half of me thinks the price is soooo shocking and that it's unlikely to have a high resale value. all our other nappies were bought preloved (cost a small fortune anyway) so it's not so bad if it's the only new one we're buying... does anyone share my shock about the cost of new nappies compared to preloved?

I think I just am aware of how much they cost. I find that a lot of pre-loved nappies are only selling when put at rock bottom prices.Which is quite sad really.
I have always been a cost per wear girl. I can justify buying an expensive item of clothing for myself it it get's worn to death.
This is the same principle that works for nappies. Think about how much you would spend on a depo nappy , it gets worn for a few hours then thrown away. A cloth nappy can be worn and loved by many LO's making the cost per wear almost nothing.

Cost per wear- that's a fab way of looking at it!!!

I was shocked ta the price of new nappies and knew I would never be able to afford them - that's why I started making them!!! But I'm sure nappies resale was a lot higher a year ago. Am I wrong?

I dont think that these custom, handmade nappies are expensive no. Even my most expensive nappies are value for money considering materials, time and love put into them.
A lot of the time preloved prices are so low. Quite often nappies only sell for half the price if not less than they originally cost even in excellent condition. Its a shame preloved sales have dropped off a little but then the saving on cloth even without the resale of nappies bought is huge so even half the original purchase price back is a bonus.

You can't compare the price of an embriodered, handmade nappy with a mass produced foreign import though

When you've designed a nappy yourself for your little one, or picked an embroidery that has a special meaning then it's not just about the cost of getting it new compared to other preloved nappies. It's special so of course you'd pay more.

I've sold on nappies I no longer want/like/use and to ne honest, anything I get back for them is a bonus. I think like this: you wouldn't get back money on disposables. And even if you only get half the original price for it: that still means you've used a gorgeous new nappy for half it's rrp!

My stash is a mixture of preloved, new off the shelf & customs!
