Wool or fleece backed san pro

I've seen some gorgeous tie-dye effect san pro but they're wool or fleece backed - are these effective in providing a waterproof barrier? The fleece nappy wrap I have allows damp through. And would the wool need any future treatment such as lanolising? Finally, are they wool backed ones thicker than standard san pro? Thanks!

I only have homemademama fleece backed san pro and fussybutt wool backed san pro so I'm not sure if it's different with other makes but I've found both reliable, my wool backed are a bit thicker than fleece backed, and I haven't treated my wool backed ones at all - as far as I know you don't need to.
