How to sew stretchy fabrics?

Hey all,

Looking for info on how best to put stretchy materials through the sewing machine. I want to turn some long sleeve baby vests (with poppers) into long sleeve t-shirts, so I'll need to cut them down and then hem them. I've put fleece through the machine before, but because I'm inexperienced, I put too much tension on the material and pulled it through. When it cam off the material was stretched and the sewn hem held it that way so it was useless. How should I handle the fabric? It's the normal slightly stretchy material that poppered vests are made from.

Thanks,
Sarah

Hi - I have this problem too. I *think* you need a walking foot for your machine. I'm sure someone more experienced can confirm?
