Fabric for sewing a MT

Postby Cyrillia » Sat Jun 09, 2012 4:00 am

Hey all,

I'm looking into making my own MT, and I'm wondering whether this material would be strong enough for the straps/body.

Thanks,
Sarah

It doesn't say what weight it is :-? I've had this from them beforehttp://www.fabricuk.com/fabrics.php?fabric_type=42 and that would be perfect, I think the twill might not be sturdy enough.

Thanks for that - that was actually the second thing that I looked at. :D After I'd posted I noticed that the the twill was listed as being good for a lot of clothing uses, whereas the one you linked had more home uses and I'd read elsewhere on the net that that was much better.

Hmmm, now just got to pluck up the courage to try and make one.... :giggle:

I think I have heard of people using ikea fabrics as they are thick and funky :)

You can always use that for one or 2 of the layers, and then use a funky quilters cotton for the outer layer so that its pretty

That's what I'm planning on - I'm looking at this pattern: http://scanditute.blogspot.co.uk/ - it uses corduroy for the straps and then a three layer body - the inner is canvas, then two decorative outer layers so that it's reversible. I was thinking of using the cord for one and a nice cotton for the other.

Was looking at this corduroy - http://www.fabricuk.com/fabrics.php?fabric_type=704, and this canvas - http://www.fabricuk.com/fabrics.php?fabric_type=156.

Any thoughts?

Thats the pattern I used for my MT  I made wrap style straps tho rather than padded ones. And when I make another one, I would put the little tabs for the sleep hood on both sides of the straps, and I would make the waistband bigger so it was more of a SSC style waistband. Those fabrics look good to me :)

Ikea lenda fabric is great, I've used it for a wrap and a half buckle with wrap straps, it dyes really well.
This is the half buckle I made
