If you don't want to try a zip again how about a strip of velcro?

PUL, cotton, and a zip. You can make a strap from the cotton :)

This is my favourite!

It's for zipped pouches with 2 layers!
So would work fab for pul and cotton!

Thanks everyone i def need a zip as its going to be a real heavy duty bag used for swimming and don't think velcro would hold. I think i might wait til Tuesday at my sewing class and then i can be walked through the zip :D

That tutorial is exactly how I make my wet bags :)
You could pop a loop of fabtic on each side, and then make a strap out of cotton and attach to the loops, then the strap would lay flat. If you sewed the shoulder strap directly into the side seam, it would twist and wouldnt lay quite flat.

You can put a zip in with a normal foot/walking foot, but it is easier with a zipper foot. I only used a zipper foot for the first time last year, i had always just used normal feet in the past
