Seam finishing?

Postby sim » Sun Oct 13, 2013 2:30 pm

Those of you who sew

@Bernadette
@gilbertandmartha
@Frances
and anyone else...

When sewing clothes with woven fabric do you / how do you finish the seams? Do you overcast them and if so, what stitch do you use? I don't have a serger / over locker....

I use an overlocker but before I bought it I would either zig the seams with a zig-zag stitch before ironing the hem up and sewing, or more often iron the raw edge up, iron it up again to hide the raw edge then sew with a simple straight stitch or zig-zag.

Gaahh post disappeared.

Well I finish the seam with a zigzagtyoe of stich or I make a double hem or I use biaistape or something else. It depends on what i make and my mood to be honest.
I don't have an overlocker so just my normal machine.

hmmm finishing isn;t one of my strong points. And I haven't really made much for other people. I did get some pinking shears and did the edges with that. But now I have my overlocker so just use that!

I'll post pics later of today's makes but I've tried all sorts - inseams and outr leg seams I 'overlocked' with a variety of stitches to see what worked best, I enclosed the raw edges where the waistband attached with bias tape and zig zagged the double folded the hems.

I think I might start looking for a serger :)

I have an overlocker, but my mum who sew's doesn't. She zig zag the seams on all the stuff she makes. Lately she has bought it over to me and asked me to overlock it for her!

Your PJ's look fantastic and your knits are beautiful.

I don't have a serger, but my sewing machine has an "overcasting" foot ... So I can kind of overlock the edges.

If I don't use that - then I always double hem.
