Postby clothmama » Sun Mar 09, 2008 9:07 pm

Ok after salivating and procrastinating have realised I'm a total idiot and MIL is an amazing sewer with about 2 rooms full of material and she is more than happy to make me one!!! SO where can I get a pattern for a toddler style one (are they higher at the back or something?)

Right have looked at the pattern Louise has used which is amazing as it has changable panels

http://www.bradley-etheridge.com/MaeMeiTai.htm

I then looked at the toddlerhawk sizes and it seems you just make it about 2" higher so job done have emailed mil! :D :D

OK that link doesn't work any more but here is another Mei Tai pattern that does have the interchangeable panels:

This one looks nice ( not changeable panels):

here is a 'Man-Tai' :giggle: :giggle: with a pocket!

This one has extra wide straps for extra comfort (so they say!)

This one is a SSC with clips

I love the Mai Tai with the interchangeable panels. That's so funky :D
If I have any other kiddies, I'll be making myself one of those I think. DD is too old/heavy to wear now :( lol

Try a woven wrap instead - you can back carry which helps if they're heavy.

I used a ring sling with DS for ages - and even though he was skinny, he's much heavier than he looks! Mostly it's a case of building up your stamina! That's why I'm starting early with DD - hoping she doesn't outstrip my strength!

It's great when you're out shopping - I always end up with a pushchair full of shopping and DD in the wrap! :hohoho:

I've got a ring sling off a friend of a friend and dawn won't go in it. keep wearing her teddies in it so she'll want a go!
I'm going to steal Jayne's MT for a little bit when we next meet up, see if Dawn goes in that instead.

I'm very new to making things but want to have a go at making a mei tai. What material do I need for it? I'm guessing it needs to be very durable due to strain from heavy baby but what do I need to look for (or search for on ebay!)

I made mine from furnishing fabrics too. If possible I'd go in and have a look somewhere rather than buy online- at least then you can feel the fabrics and decide if you'd be comfortable with your child's weight in it. I made a variation of this one http://www.sleepingbaby.net/jan/Baby/bbo.html for my DD1 when she was about 8 months old and it was fab- really comfy. I added a sleep hood and a pocket onto it too. I made the main body out of plain material then bought about 1/4 meter of expensive stuff to do the detain in so it worked out cheap and pretty. This is a picture of it with the hood up. Please excuse that it's a rotten picture of me-I don't think I'd managed to even wash my hair in days  ...obviously too busy making a Mei Tai!
