first time quilting, advice?

Postby nelix2000 » Wed Jul 14, 2010 11:27 am

Hi there, I have decided to make a quilt for dds christmas and have been looking at jelly rolls etc. Can anyone tell me how much fabric I would need to make, say, a single bed cover size?

I am a novice, with no machine so this will be hand sewn :hohoho: I am not sure what I am letting myself in for!

Aslo what sort of stitched are best for the panels, the edging and the wadding?

Thankyou!

You need some books! And I think Ems who quilts is away on holiday. I quilt and have basic knowledge, a jelly roll will be enough to make one quilt. You might want to look at getting a machine as it'll be much quicker

Try here for advice http://www.cottonpatch.co.uk/ and here http://www.quilterscloth.co.uk/

Good luck!

I've only made cushion covers before, but they were all hand-sewn (with the paper templates inside) - I think a quilt would take AGES! :( sorry :-?

It would depend on how your going to quilt it, ie using smaller pieces.. more seams.. need more fabric, I'd definitely go with larger blocks if you want it done by then! A completely hand stitched quilt ie.. even the binding round the edge wouldn't last as long as a machine stitched quilt. Doing binding both sides by hand will be quite an effort. You would prob be best to borrow or buy a machine.

I'm just about half way through my first quilt using a jelly roll and i think it's taken me ages and I'm using machine. There are a quite few books out on making quilts from jelly rolls or http://www.modabakeshop.com/ is all about using jelly rolls, layer cakes, charm packs etc and has loads of free patterns/tutorials. My quilt is a coin quilt which is pretty simple and having the strips to work with certainly cuts down on cutting time. I used directions from a book on amazon that has the 'look inside feature' http://www.amazon.co.uk/Jelly-Roll-Quilts-Perfect-Making/dp/0715328638/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1279132363&sr=8-1 it's the Bars of Gold one. If you're on ravelry there's the UK Quilters Group where quite a few of us have been doing a jelly roll quilt-a-long.

I thought I would need a machine :giggle: may need to see if I can borrow one as cannot afford the expenditure for one project. Unless I got into sewing!

There is so much to think about! I shall go to the library and see if I can get a book or two out as I think that is the way forward and join ravelry!

Thankyou so much!
