I learnt at school (we did home economics) so that taught me patchwork, applique, zips etc, but I've forgotten some of it now. My Mum can sew so she taught me about fabric, following a pattern etc
I learnt at school and did textiles to near the end. At school we never used knit fabrics - we always used wovens. For a beginner I think that a woven (without any stretch) is the best place to start.
This book is a lovely book that gives you patterns and explains how to do different techniques. It is also one of the rare few books that are as useful for an experienced sewer as they are for a beginner. Lisa (the author) is on facebook and she helps people along if they have any questions. http://www.u-handbag.com/index.php?main ... cts_id=908
I did sew a bit when I was a kid but just very plain easy thingies. Decided a few years back I wanted a sewingmachine, got that from my lovely DH, and just tried. Well think most of you know what kind of things I make now it's just try try try I think.
I learnt at school but only basics shoes, cushions etc more recently I've learnt from patterns, books and the Internet and at the moment I'm attempting to learn hand embroidery
