Hi, I've been making quite a few dresses for my little girl, most of them are made with just one layer of cotton and some have s lined (with cotton) top part, but I'm wondering what to do for when it starts being cold? What fabric would be better to use, and am I likely to need different patterns? Thanks!

You could line with another layer of cotton. I prefer to layer summer dresses with co-ordinating leggings or tights and long-sleeved tops underneath in winter

A lot of little tunic type dresses look great in corduroy or other warm winter fabrics. For really warm I've seen fleece lined dresses too - I think you can go wile really depending on your pattern you may need to size up if the fabric was very thick maybe (or that may be not true but thinking if very thick it may come up small :giggle: ).

I like corduroy or denim pinafores for little girls in winter, but I have also seen great fleece pinafore dresses. They don't need to be lined, but some people like to line these dresses. Generally for a lining you would use a lightweight polyester eg http://www.calicolaine.co.uk/Fabrics-Dr ... c1_30.html

Sorry, misunderstood, thought you wanted to carry on using cotton and were wondering about lining fabric  Great suggestions from Tory and Rae, Minkee also makes lovely snuggly dresses.

Thanks! Well yes, ideally I'd like to keep on using cotton simply because I still have lots of really pretty stuff, but corduroy and denim might be the way to go... I try to avoid synthetic fibres for children's clothing, but coming to think about it she'd be wearing a top/vest underneath anyway so it won't be in contact with her skin! Oh well, looks like I'm going to have to try a bit of everything, lots of :sewing: to do then

@katyav - what did you decide to do in the end? I want to make Iris a pinafore dress; the pattern I have is for a lined dress. I'd really like to use a medium weight 100% cotton fabric I have but, with winter on the way here, I'm not sure if that's the best plan. So not sure whether to line with another medium weight cotton, to make it a bit thicker, or leave this fabric for a summer dress and go with a cord for the pinafore. (But then, what to line that with!)

Last winter I made Molly a couple of pinafore style dresses, but didn't think to line them while I was making them  so I used the same pattern to make a couple of petticoats from flannel (old bedsheet), and trimmed them with some lace, they were very handy for wearing under the dresses when needed. I have used cheap polyester lining for a velvet dress, which worked well. You can buy cotton lining too.

Could you make the dress reversible?
