Prewashing bought bias binding?

Postby Tara84 » Fri Dec 02, 2011 7:46 pm

I'm planning on making my mum a quilt for xmas, it will be my first quilt. I've bought all the fabric for it and got pre-made double fold bias binding to bind the edge, do I need to prewash it? Surely it will all unravel and lose the folds if I do but if I don't will it shrink and ruin the finished quilt?

Bias binding is cut on the cross grain which allows it to stretch around corners etc without the 'rippling' etc.
I have never washed bias binding, and I imagine if you do then you would have a nightmare of a time getting the folds back into the binding before you sew with it.
You can make your own bias binding with one of those bias binding makers. It is very simple and effective and of course you can prewash your fabric before making up the binding.

I think I might try prewashing a small piece of the binding and see how well it cooed and if it shrinks. If this quilt turns out ok I'll have a go at making my own

P.s @Rae postman just delivered my fabric, thank you
